Kevin Møller: "I want to finish with another trophy"

Now, the 36-year-old Dane is aiming for his third and final trophy with Flensburg at the Winamax EHF Finals 2026, as he will return home to his former club GOG at the end of the season, concluding his second spell with the German side, having spent four years (2015–2018) in Flensburg, before moving to Barça, then returning in 2021.

"We are back in Hamburg, which means, so far, we have had a successful season in the European League, though we lost some matches in the main round," Møller reflects. "Right in my first season at Flensburg, in 2014/15, I won my first title, becoming a German cup winner, now I want to finish with another trophy. But, of course, there are still many obstacles in our way — but we will do everything to return to the winners’ podium."

SG Flensburg-Handewitt played a faultless group phase with six victories in the same number of matches, but then lost three of the four main round ties — all of which came against teams who will also be part of the Winamax EHF Finals 2026: THW Kiel and Montpellier Handball.

After making the relatively short trip over the Danish border to eliminate SAH Aarhus in the play-offs, Flensburg stayed on German soil to take on another domestic rival in the quarter-finals: TSV Hannover-Burgdorf. Following a draw at home in the first leg, Møller and his teammates dominated the reverse fixture in a 78-goal encounter, beating the "Recken" 43:35. 

“After the first leg, there were some doubts if we could manage to book the ticket to Hamburg, they put a lot of pressure on us. But, finally, we showed our qualities. But those quarter-finals were really special,” says Møller.

On 30/31 May, Flensburg will see the same teams they met last year at the Barclays Arena: Kiel, Montpellier and their semi-final opponents, MT Melsungen. “It is a little bit strange that the same four teams are back again, but it also proves the quality of those clubs. But it is even a bigger coincidence that even the same semis were drawn.”

Last year, Flensburg needed overtime after a rollercoaster of a semi-final to beat MT Melsungen 35:34: “This match was really nail-biting. The momentum could have turned to both sides. Except our Bundesliga duel in the current season, all matches against Melsungen were really, really close. But you cannot compare last year to this year, every match has its own story, all previous matches are just past. And if there is only one match in which you can make it to the final, everything will be different,” says Møller. 

The Winamax EHF Finals 2026 have extra significance for the three German teams, as it is the last chance for each of them to win a trophy this season, and potentially a big chance to earn a spot in the Machineseeker EHF Champions League, depending on the winner of the TruckScout24 EHF FINAL4 2026. "But we have no thoughts on what might be the outcome of this trophy, we simply want to win it," Møller declares.

In 2025, Flensburg beat Montpellier in the final, 32:25, to become the first club to defend the title in the EHF European League Men. "Maybe the result looks quite clear, but we needed to invest a lot of mental and physical energy. Maybe this incredibly tough semi unleashed extra energy and confidence. This was the reason we managed to decide the final much earlier than the semi the day before,” admits the Dane.

Now, Møller’s side aims for the third consecutive trophy: "At Flensburg, everybody expects a title in every season, so after missing the final tournament of the German cup and missing the league trophy, this is our chance. And if we win, we will definitely put SG’s name in the history books of handball with three trophies in a row. And this is what we aim for," concludes the goalkeeper.
