Gjinovci: An immeasurable contribution to handball in Kosovo

Gjinovci was in his role as Secretary General of the KHF when Kosovo were admitted as an Associated Federation to the EHF and later on as a full member, as well as when the KHF became a member federation of the IHF. Those milestones meant the national teams could compete in international competitions, marking significant moments in Kosovo’s handball history. Furthermore, handball was a leading sport in Kosovo in this regard, with the KHF the first admitted to its collective governing bodies. 

“He performed his duties as Secretary General with exemplary devotion and passion until his last breath. His contribution to the development of Kosovan handball is colossal. After a successful career as a handball player of Pristina, the late Gjinovci took the leadership of the Pristina club. He sacrificed a lot to lead the club successfully, and at one time melted all his wealth for the club's wellbeing,” said the KHF statement. 

Mere weeks ago, in July, the M20 European Championship was held in Pristina, with Gjinovci having an important part in the success of the tournament. 

“Izet’s contribution in leading and overseeing the organisation of the competition was wholly essential to this most positive outcome,” said the condolence letter sent by EHF President Michael Wiederer and Secretary General Martin Hausleitner to the KHF.

“Serving as the Secretary General of the Handball Federation of Kosovo for over two decades, he was a true ambassador for the sport, having held such a critical role in building a solid foundation for the players and the guardians of handball in the country.

“He will be remembered for his immeasurable contribution to the development of handball in Kosovo.” 

In 2021, Gjinovci was elected to the EHF Court of Appeal. His subsequent activities in this area were not only testament to the experience and knowledge he brought to the tasks, but emphasised his dedication to the betterment of handball on all levels. 

In memoriam, Izet will be remembered for his admirable personal qualities, especially his willingness to collaborate with the European handball family, proving himself time and again an excellent partner for the national handball federations of Europe.
