Norway hunted as Hungary, Denmark and hosts Romania seek EURO Cup glory

The hosts will face Denmark — silver medallists of the EHF EUROs in 2022 and 2024 — in the second semi-final, while the event will be thrown off with the first semi-final clash between defending EHF EURO and EHF EURO Cup champions Norway and Hungary, who won the bronze medal at the EHF EURO 2024. On Sunday we will find out whether Norway can extend their incredible series of trophies.

The two Scandinavian sides not only arrive at Bucharest with a clean record, but also with the highest number of goals — Norway with 206 and Denmark with 203 — and the lowest number of goals conceded — 130 and 132, respectively.

SEMI-FINALS

Norway vs Hungary

• Norway qualified for the final tournament as winners of group 1 after six victories, while Hungary finished second in group 2 with four wins and two defeats, both against Denmark

• the last big match between the two was the EHF EURO 2024 semi-final in Vienna, when Norway took a 30:22 win

• since the implementation of the Women’s EHF EURO Cup before the European Championship in 2022, Norway have won all 18 matches played and won the trophy twice; Hungary were runners-up in the 2024 edition

• Norway’s three-time IHF World Player of the Year Henny Reistad is the top scorer of the competition after the completion of the group phase with 35 goals, while Katrin Klujber netted 30 times for Hungary

• at the EHF EURO 2024, the outcome was reversed: Klujber topped the tournament’s scoring charts with 60 goals, ahead of Reistad with 50

• the overall record in competitive matches sees Norway clearly ahead with 20 wins, one draw and seven defeats against Hungary

• both sides are on the winners’ list of the Women’s EHF EURO: Norway are record winners with 10 trophies, while Hungary won gold in 2000

Denmark vs Romania

• both sides play the EHF EURO Cup for the first time; Denmark were winners of group 2 with six wins in the same number of matches, while Romania finished second in group 1 below Norway with four wins and two defeats

• top scorers of both sides before the final tournament are Sorina Maria Grozav with 32 goals for Romania and Julie Scaglione, who netted 26 times for Denmark

• while Denmark played their seventh EHF EURO final in 2024 — and won silver for the fourth time, besides three previous trophies — Romania finished 11th, and their only EHF EURO medal dates back to 2010, when they clinched bronze

• Denmark’s national team coach Helle Thomsen steered Romania’s top club CSM Bucuresti twice, in 2017/18 and 2024/25, right before she took over the Danish side; assistant coach Bojana Popovic is currently at CSM's helm

• the most memorable match between the two was the 2015 IHF World Championship quarter-final in Herning, when hosts Denmark were defeated by Romania 30:31 after overtime, as Cristian Neagu netted 15 times

• Romania clinched their only EHF EURO medal so far in the same arena in Herning, winning the 2010 bronze medal match against Denmark with a 16:15 victory
