Germany remain unbeaten in official matches against Austria, winning their Men's EHF EURO 2026 opener in Herning, but it was a tough and close clash. The neighbours’ duel, attended by 5,820 fans, saw two extremely movable and active defensive sides, as Austria stopped the fast match play of their opponents for a long time.

Finally, Lukas Zerbe’s penalty goal for 28:25 and a penalty save by Andreas Wolff, both in minute 58, decided the match.

It was a tough game, very physical game, we matched the physicality of the opponent very good and that helped us a lot to win the game.

Overall, I think we can be proud of the game and it was a good fight and we can see that we can beat Germany if everyone is playing on his highest level. For now we are disappointed, but we have the final against Spain.
