How they rate themselves
Following in Oltchim's footsteps is a big challenge and the results have been inconsistent. With important wins being followed by clear losses, there is an impression that Valcea must do more to improve.
Regardless of the results, the team is still appreciated and cherished, with the fans in the "Traian" Arena regularly creating an electric atmosphere.
"The objective is to qualify for the EHF Finals this season and I am sure we can do it. The only setback is that we will play 14 games in January and February 2022, which is a packed schedule," said head coach Bent Dahl.
"Our objective is to continue on the same track as Oltchim did, helping Valcea to be a mainstay in the European handball family," added Dahl about Valcea's desire to compete at the highest level.
Did you know?
Handball purists will definitely remember the golden "Oltchim" days for Romanian handball, when the powerhouse club went close to winning the EHF Champions League in 2009/10. Although the club folded three years later, they were reborn from the ashes as SCM Ramnicu Valcea.
The colours and the spirit are still there, but the emergence of strong sides like CSM Bucuresti has handed Ramnicu Valcea a serious challenge.
As big underdogs in the 2018/19 season, SCM Ramnicu Valcea shocked CSM on their home court and bounced back to claim the Romanian league title. Their rivalry is still the biggest in the Romanian league, and Valcea won 31:30 at home when the two sides met this autumn.
What the numbers say
34 – this will be SCM Ramnicu Valcea's 34th season participating in a European competition. They won the Women's IHF Cup twice, in 1983/84 and 1988/89, the Cup Winners' Cup in 2006/07 and the Champions Trophy in 2007. They were also runners-up in the EHF Champions League in 2009/10.
