Sweden take third trophy after overtime thriller

After 70 intense and thrilling minutes, Sweden raised the trophy on the winners’ podium of the Men's 18 EHF EURO in Podgorica, Montenegro. For the third time after 1997 and 2018, a Swedish team took the title in this age category. Two years ago, also in Podgorica, Sweden had lost the final against Spain. This year, tournament MVP Nikola Roganovic and his team struck back, but it was a tough battle until their neighbours Denmark had been beaten 37:36 after overtime. Due to this close defeat, the Danes still wait for a title in this age category as they finished second for the fourth time after 2001, 2006 and 2008.

Denmark vs Sweden 36:37 (12:17, 29:29)

Sweden were the dominant team for 51 minutes – backed by another incredible performance of goalkeeper Viggo Håkansson. After a 4:1 start, the Swedish side were ahead 17:12 at the break, then it took only nine minutes until Denmark had levelled the result for the first time at 19:19. From that moment on, the match was on the edge, with Sweden constantly taking the lead and Denmark equalizing again.

In minute 51, the Danes broke the spell with their first advantage in the match, at 26:25. Sweden managed to strike back several times but Denmark entered the last minute of the regular time with a 29:28 lead – before Arvid Andreasson netted for the 29:29 ten seconds before the end.

The overtime needed to decide, and in the break, it was a close 32:31 in favour of the Danes. But again, Viggo Håkansson, who finished on 17 saves, became the X-factor for his team. His saves provided Sweden with a crucial 4:0 run right at the start of the second overtime, finished again by Andreasson’s strike for 35:32. Still, Denmark showed morale and struck back for 36:37. The time was ticking against the Danes, represented by goalkeeper Frederik Møller Wolff and right back Oskar Møller Jakobsen in the All-star Team, who had to satisfy with silver in the end.
