Hungary win first Men's 18 medal after ten years

Hungary won an incredible bronze medal match at the Men's 18 EHF EURO in Montenegro against Iceland after an overtime thriller. The “Vikings” had taken control of the first 45 minutes and seemed to be on the winners’ way, leading 27:22. But right after, Dagur Ani Heimisson received a red card after his third suspension and the match started to turn around despite Iceland being still ahead by 30:26 and 32:30 only 80 seconds before the final buzzer.

Thanks to a double strike from best scorer Marko Eklemovic (seven goals in total), Hungary managed to reach the overtime. And finally a 4:0 run for the 36:33 decided the bronze final – and made the Hungarians jump for joy. The 35:34 victory meant Hungary’s first medal in this age category after winning silver at the M18 EHF EURO 2014 in Poland after losing the final against France.

Germany – M18 EHF EURO bronze medallists in 2022 – finished the tournament in Podgorica ranked fifth after beating Serbia 29:23 in the 5/6 placement match. Norway left 2022 M18 EHF EURO champions Spain closely behind 38:37 in the 7/8 placement match, while Faroe Island took the last ticket to the 2025 U19 IHF World Championship in Poland winning the placement match 15/16 against Austria 26:24. The teams ranked first to 15th book their ticket to the upcoming IHF World Championship.
