Player of the Year

The 2022/23 season in European handball promises to be one to remember as the EHF celebrates its 30th anniversary – and to help mark the occasion we want you, the fans, to vote for and crown this season's Player of the Year.

The awards - for both men and women - will honor the best players in each position - best goalkeeper, left wing, left back, center back, right back, right wing and line player plus best defender and rookie of the season. Taking these votes into consideration, we'll also select a season MVP, which will then be inducted into the Hall of Fame. Beach handball athletes will also be included, ensuring every aspect of European handball is covered. Cool right?

Good questions. Well, in the EHF Champions League, a team of the round will be named at the end of each week, with the top three players from each position who have received the most nominations by the end of the quarter-finals making the list. Those names will appear at the bottom of this page.

For EHF EURO it's slightly different. Every member of the coveted All-star Team gets added to the list. In order to cover both genders (remember, it's the Women's event this season, the next Men's EHF EURO is in 2024), the European players nominated for the All-star Team at the IHF World Championship are put forward.

Speaking of, the Women's EHF EURO 2022 has identified the first fixed nominees for the Player of the Year Award - the nine members of the tournament's All-star Team.

MVP Henny Reistad of Norway, French goalkeeper Cléopatre Darleux of France, Danish left wing Emma Friis , Romanian left back Cristina Neagu , Norwegian center back Stine Oftedal , right back Katrin Klujber of Hungary, Montenegrin right wing Jovanka Radicevic , French line player Pauletta Foppa and Danish defender Kathrine Heindahl are all guaranteed a place in the final list of nominations.

Experts featuring some of the biggest names in handball have been named to choose the Team of the Round in the EHF Champions League as part of the EHF Player of the Year campaign.

In the Machineseeker EHF Champions League Stefan Lövgren, László Nagy, Ivano Balic, Victor Tomas, Carlos Prieto, and Vid Kavticnik will make the call on which male player will be named as the stand-out performer from each round.

Meanwhile, Eduarda Amorim, Jelena Grubisic, Anja Althaus, Katarina Bulatovic, and Johanna Ahlm have the decision in their hands for the pick of the players in the EHF Champions League Women.

Additional players who perform in the EHF European League (one per position), as well as EHF EURO Qualifiers and national team matches (maximum three per position), can get themselves on the shortlist. This will also appear at the bottom of this page - so remember to keep your eyes peeled. Each position also has the potential to include a wildcard entry - sadly, it doesn't mean you can vote for your mate at your local club. The maximum number of candidates per position is nine.

Beach handball players are not forgotten about either, with the best female and male players nominated based on the All-star Team nominations at the EHF Champions Cup 2022, ebt Finals 2023, and EHF Beach Handball EURO 2023 all taken into consideration. Players, coaches, media, and fans can participate in this vote following the conclusion of the EHF Beach Handball EURO (24-28 May).

Have a look below for a short overview of where we are with points in beach handball.

The candidates will be finalized once the quarter-finals in the Machineseeker EHF Champions League and EHF Champions League Women have been played in mid-May 2023.

Europe's first Players of the Year will be announced at a glitzy gala in Vienna on June 26, 2023.
